We recognise that each child is a unique individual with his/her own special needs and route to learning. We seek to build strong foundations by enriching learning at the child's stage of development.
We have high expectations of each child whatever his/her special needs, race, gender, culture, religion or ability and we ensure each child has full access to a broad and balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum.
Mrs. Elizabeth Leer is our Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator (and also Deputy Head.) If at any point you are concerned about your child’s development Mrs Leer would be happy to offer advice and support.
The needs of children vary greatly and each child with special educational needs will have an Individual Plan. This is written in liaison with the child’s parents, their Key Worker and the Class Teacher. These plans are reviewed regularly (based on the review date shown on the plan), to ensure the children are given the relevant time, help and attention needed to make progress.
Children with special educational needs and disability (SEND) have additional observations and staff led activity time. At times and if appropriate, they may be taken out of the classroom for short periods for 1 to 1 work or to take part in a group session.
We run Attention Groups and Language Groups. These groups adapt to meet the needs of the children.
Uniquely, the nursery has a 'clean room', which is used to support children with particular medical needs. Staff have additional training so they can assist children with interventions such as naso-gastric feeding etc.
Rothesay's SEND report provides information on how the nursery will support children who have a special educational need and their families.
The nursery also has an Disability and Equality Scheme and Accessibility Plan which sets out how the governing body will promote equality of opportunity for disabled people.
Thrive® promotes children’s and young people’s positive mental health by helping adults know how to be and what to do in response to their differing and sometimes distressed behaviour.
We adopted the Thrive Approach in 2018 to support the mental well-being of all the children who come to Rothesay. The approach was developed using neuroscience and childhood development research. The online assessment and action-planning tools are invaluable in assessing the social and emotional development of our children. We have found that it complements the EYFS Framework for PSED and goes further to support our children to become more confident and capable in dealing with their sometimes very complex emotions. We have three Thrive Licenced Practitioners, and most of the team has had training from an external Thrive Licenced Trainer.
